Swinglehurst's Story- by Laura Mars

Every year at about the time it gets cold and the icicles
hang off the trees and the skies are loaded and heavy,
something wicked this way comes.
Swinglehurst, Prince of the little men of snow, kind of like
a snowy leprachaun.
He is the leader of the little tiny snow men, because as we all know,
snowmen are usually huge and very solid and jolly creatures.
The little snowy boys are mean and get up to mischief, in the night
they spill water on the pavements so that it freezes.
When someone falls over they laugh their little heads off.
They have the nickname the black eyed peas because they have currants
for eyes, a pea for a nose and a carrot for a mouth.
There is a gathering all over the snowy landscape and the little Peas
have a feast, they eat snowcakes, snow gateaux, and snowy wedding cake.
If they eat after midnight they go quite beserk and can be quite upsetting
and nasty.
Swinglehurst is such a party animal but soon he and his clan will be on the move as soon as the weather fares better.
I think they slide off to Norway in an ice ship to terrorise the Norwegians
who are more used to Black Eyed Peas and Trolls who cause mischief.
They disappear as soon as they came.

BIRDS and FLOWERS

Book of The Cobweb People.

It was around this time a couple of years ago that i wrote
my Cobweb People Book.
The little Cobwebs morph themselves together from spider web
and they become little ballerinas and adventurers.
The exhibition in Folkestone displayed dolls in 3D cobweb form,
sculptures and books and paintings.
I made them come to life in little wool sculptures as displayed
in the pics.

I do love Christmas and I love to decorate, when the weather is cold
and windy like Wuthering Heights, the glow of a fire, some candles
and the sparkle of a chandelier make it sooo cosy.

A Postcard From Summer

When you live in close proximity to neighbours things can get a bit fraught.

I tried smoothing the way with a party for the children on the community lawn.

Simple party fayre, jelly custard and trifle, sausage rolls and little cupcakes.

I brought down the dressing up box from the attic and swathed them in tulle,l ace and chiffon and of course hats and handbags.

The typical English weather did what it said on the tin and bucketed down with rain but we hid under huge garden and fishing umberellas and I told stories.

The kids had a lovely time, I was exhausted but had fun.

Things are a lot better in the close, I was even given a plant by a neighbour to say thanks.

The kids want to know if we will have another party next year, I'm thinking the answer is yes!

but the fashion OMG, why is it back?

It doesn't suit women with curves and with the media telling us that we are

getting bigger, the majority of us look like a sack of spuds.

Batwings, skinny legs, little ankle boots, big fur jackets, it only suits a stick insect.

I admit it's better than the midriff gap though.

Different Lives

All lifes experiences make us who we are, I feel like I have lived many lives already.

The people and places we are surrounded by shape what we think and do and wear.

I have lived in many places and been a different woman each time, I change my skin and colours and fashion like a chameleon.

As I grow in mind and spirit my perception of "what is" changes.

I love to learn and be influenced by many different things, I avidly seek things I'm interested in and bring them to me.

I grow my ideas and inspiration by changing a thought pattern and my mood.

The Head cCollection.

Yes I can pinpoint what influenced my love of heads.
Man loves to make images and there is nothing more expressive than the face
with all of its emotions, the happiness, the sadness, the pain the joy. Then there's the features, sensuality, hardness, the unique creation.
I've always been fascinated by ships figureheads, I was born in Greenwich and as a small child stared up into the huge scary painted faces of 18th century mast heads in the maritime museum. Originally they were animal heads and even fleeces as in The Argonauts but as time went on they evolved to be characters of the day or the ships merchant owners.
Many were lost at sea or destroyed by drying out on shore and rotted away, we are indeed fortunate that some were preserved for posterity, these good luck charms and warders of evil spirits to protect the ships from the extremes of weather are very beautiful and commanding and magnificent.
I collect heads, all kinds in many mediums.
Making the changeover to sculpture had to include sculpting heads.
The collection is growing.

Semantics

Had plenty of wake up calls for creativity but remained a somnabulist for years. When the alarm went off I awoke in another zone and have remained there ever since. It's almost like a panic attack, the call to work and produce, the ideas come spilling and I obey the command, needless to say I am very prolific. I'm inspired by everything, I suck up inspiration like a sponge, from a weed growing in the crack of a wall to a conversation remembered. I ignore convention and break every rule but get there with the same results, I do this in cooking, in painting, in sculpture and most things that I touch.

Yachts.

I was born in Greenwich, I am extremely punctual and I love the romance of the sea

yet sailing scares me.

I started painting yachts for the Whitstable art market. Boats are so jolly, they are beautiful on the horizon or at the yacht club races. The weather on the coast makes for wonderful seascapes

either mill pond or squalls or sea horses.

My first commercial art was flowers.

My daughter said do what you do best Mama, you always doodle flowers, it was true, for many years I had sketched shapes of simple flowers while on the phone or generally daydreaming.

Putting them onto canvas was a different matter. Flowers in the field and gardens are liquid

and full of movement.

I worked with acrylic building up layer upon layer using acrylic like a watercolor, loving the drips and random petals.

As I moved into oils the depth of colour was rich and satisfying and enhanced the paintings.

With florals you can be as creative as you dare, with the infinite inspiration of all of natures wonders.

Coming late to art has meant that I have had to play catch up for all the lost years.
In effect they were not lost because each and every place each and every experience has been preserved in the reservoir of creativity to draw from like a bottomless well.

My father was a marine artist but never had an original thought, he was an excellent copyist, Turner was a favourite. Throughout my childhood I saw through the eyes of an artist, my visual awareness was sharp but I never had the confidence or guidance and direction.
My parents house was filled with pottery and Picasso like quirky painted wooden spoons and a bulls head made from a coconut, little ships in dimple bottles and the record player filled the rooms with jazz, Charlie Mingus, Stan Getz and Django Rheinhardt.

I was 40 when I picked up the brush seriously and started a self taught learning curve which will continue throughout my life. I have been on the floor with frustration more times than I care to remember.
